We are reaching the unreached amongst the Purépecha people. We have partnered with a local church to equip, encourage, and empower them to reach their community. We are part of a non-profit Pueblos con Propósito, Communities of Purpose, that focuses on community development.
This region of the Michoacan state was the home of the Purépecha Emipire, which rivaled the Aztec Empire at the time of the Spanish encounter. The Purépecha were never conquered by the Aztecs. They still hold many traditional beliefs.
Less than 1% of the Purépecha population are Christians. Many Christians are persecuted and there are only a handful of Purépecha churches.
There is an incredible urgency to bring the gospel. Up in the mountains there are many people who need to hear the gospel. It is an area that is difficult and resistant. The gospel has made headway. There are churches. Some villages can freely share and others face persecution. These villages are considered engaged because there is a small group of believers who have heard the gospel.
But still there are unreached villages. Deeper into the mountains. Villages where there is no church.
We want to see lasting church plants that bring transformation amongst the people. It is a challenge that we have to equip, encourage and empower the local church to reach the unreached. There is a big desire to plant churches and go into these unreached villages.
It is relationship based. We work side by side with local church members and equip them to reach their community and go out into the unreached villages. We believe when local members are involved in their community it has a larger impact on the spread of the gospel, prevention of poverty, and transformation. Our focus is to see believers discover God’s purpose for their lives, unlocking Biblical truths and mobilizing the spread of the gospel.
We feel in love with this place over 8 years ago and has continually been in our hearts. We are so honored that God has called us to ministry in this area of Mexico. Over the years we have visited but now its time to stay.
